In the arid and semi-arid zones of South Africa, desertification has been advancing for several decades. Today, it affects millions of hectares, weakening farms and threatening the livelihoods of rural communities. \n<\/span>In nature, large herbivores move in dense herds. Their quick passage\u2014combining <\/span>trampling, dung, and saliva<\/b>\u2014stimulates the soil\u2019s biological cycle. It is not their numbers that create problems, but their immobility. When animals remain in the same place for too long, the soil becomes depleted; when they disappear entirely, it becomes stagnant and impoverished.<\/span><\/p>\n
