The massive arrival of synthetic fibres has exacerbated the decline in wool consumption, which now accounts for less than 1% of the world&#8217;s textile consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, with <\/span><b>the ecological issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at stake, the textile industry is organizing itself <\/span><b>around local production with a low environmental impact.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In France, we have <\/span><b>more than 50 breeds of sheep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that produce a variety of wools suitable for different uses such as clothing, furniture, decoration, quilting, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, some of the know-how needed to supply the textile industry with local, high-quality wool has been lost. Some breeds are considered local if they represent more than 30% of the sheep population in a given d\u00e9partement.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 of these breeds are currently threatened with abandonment by farming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past, all the wool produced by these different breeds was used in a variety of ways locally: <\/span><b>bedding, mattresses, woolen sheets, clothing, carpets, etc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_0db20381 height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the breeds from which Segard Masurel&#8217;s yarns originate:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>M\u00e9rinos d&#8217;Arles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: mainly bred in the PACA region and resulting from a cross between a local Proven\u00e7al ewe, now extinct, and Spanish Merino rams, this breed is distinguished by the fineness and softness of its wool.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Est \u00e0 Laine m\u00e9rinos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: from north-east France, this breed produces wool that is not as fine as Arles\u2019merino, but has great insulating and bulking properties, as well as being extremely hardwearing. Ideal for winter jumpers and jackets.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Ile de France<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: this breed, originally developed around Paris, is the result of a cross between Merino sheep and more beefy breeds. Its wool is bulky, insulating and hard-wearing. Ideal for marine jumpers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All these breeds belong to the large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.segardmasurel.com\/en\/all-you-need-to-know-about-merino-wool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merino<\/a> group, as they are all the result of crossbreeding with the Merino breed. A very fine fibre is obviously less resistant than a thicker fibre. Each type of\u00a0 therefore has properties that define its possible uses.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The choice of yarn type (combed or carded) and fineness is expressed by the metric number (Nm), which is determined by the fineness (<a href=\"https:\/\/iwto.org\/wool-supply-chain\/about-wool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expressed in microns<\/a>) and length of the fibre and the number of fibres in the cross-section.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do these terms mean?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; <\/span><b>Micron (\u00b5m):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expresses the diameter of the fibre. A lower number corresponds to a finer wool, often more suitable for direct contact with the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>&#8211; Metric number (Nm):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This unit is used to measure the thickness of the yarn. The higher the Nm, the finer the yarn.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><b>Which French sheep wool yarns for which use?\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the size of the fibre expressed in microns and its metric number, the yarn will be used for different textile products.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Segard Masurel, our yarns are available from stock in various colours and can be dyed on demand from 30kg upwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ansouis yarn\u00a0:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 100% M\u00e9rinos d&#8217;Arles 21.5 microns in Nm 1\/30 and 2\/30. A yarn more suited to fine knits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Le Dorat yarn:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 100% Ile de France breed, 28 microns in Nm 2\/28 with greater resistance to rubbing and bad weather.
