However, from a technical point of view, merino wool comes from sheep of the merino breed. The term merino therefore refers to a breed or group of breeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row us_custom_0db20381 height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"g-cols wpb_row via_grid cols_2 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_middle type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><b>The characteristics of Merino wool<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Merino sheep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a more regular wool and is not known to contain kemps. <\/span><b>The kemp<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a modulated fibre that can be found in the fleece of certain mutton breeds. Because of its composition, it does not take dye.\u00a0 Wool with kemps is sometimes sought after to give a style to certain types of carpet, but is rather shunned when it comes to garments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merino wool is characterised as <\/span><b>a fine woo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l, and averages around 20 microns with a soft handle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The diameter of the wool fibre is <\/span><b>measured in microns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> (\u00b5m)<\/strong>. The <\/span><b>Rambouillet Merino and Arles Merino<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> breeds are rather fine, and we use<\/span><b> Arles Merinos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our <\/span><b>&#8220;Ansouis&#8221; French wool yarn<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The <\/span><b>Eastern Merino breed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is not as fine but more insulating. It can be used for some very fine products. We also use it at Segard Masurel in our <\/span><b>&#8220;Le Dorat&#8221; yarn.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some breeds in France are known as <\/span><b>&#8220;merinised&#8221;,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the result of crossing Merino sheep with, for example, more meat breeds.<strong> The <\/strong><\/span><b>Ile de France breed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one example, which we also use.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_medium\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><b>What you need to know about Merino wool\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a technical point of view, merino wool comes from <\/span><b>sheep of the merino breed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and by misuse of language it has now become <\/span><b>a generic marketing term for fine wool<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merino wool is an <\/span><b>excellent choice for garments<\/b> <b>worn directly on the skin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as underwear and technical underlays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies have shown that using superfine merino wool garments (between 15 and 18.5 microns) next to the skin can help <\/span><b>improve the symptoms of eczema and atopic dermatitis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (source: <a href=\"https:\/\/iwto.org\/wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/iwto.org\/wellness\/<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wool, a naturally <\/span><b>breathable fibre<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is also renowned for its ability to <\/span><b>absorb moisture<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (up to 30% of its weight).
