This technique, known as felting, has been used by many cultures around the world since the dawn of time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><b>various techniques<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for processing wool into felt: by moistening it, using a needle or hot water, using traditional or industrial methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But very often, for end-consumers, felting is a result of a mistake in the care of woollen textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this article, we explore the process of felting wool and the unique qualities and uses of the resulting felt.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_medium\"><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2><b>The felting process<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Wool felt is a non-woven fabric<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The fibres are randomly intermingled to form a dense, compact fabric. We go from the fibres to the product without spinning, weaving or knitting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This phenomenon occurs thanks to the scales found on animal hair and wool in particular. Under mechanical action (friction, needles&#8230;) each wool fibre advances in relation to the others in a single direction, the scales preventing the fibre from moving backwards, like sealskin under touring skis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By advancing randomly, <\/span><b>the fibres intermingle until they form a compact mass<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As long as it&#8217;s not too compact, you can give it the shape you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Heat and humidity cause the scales to open a little, accentuating this phenomenon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Felting can be a risk when caring for woollen garments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the same phenomenon that occurs when you inadvertently put a woollen garment in the washing machine on an unsuitable programme, such as a high temperature, a spin speed that is too fast or an inappropriate detergent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why <\/span><b>it is so important to wash wool products at a low temperature and dry them flat<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes wool is treated to prevent felting.
