What<\/span> is<\/span> regenerative<\/span> agriculture?<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

Regenerative agriculture refers to farming methods and techniques<\/strong> designed to improve soil health, restore biodiversity<\/strong> and thereby reduce the environmental impact of agricultural practices.<\/p>\n

The idea is to farm in a more sustainable<\/strong> and responsible way whilst maintaining the balance of the three key elements: soil health, wildlife and plant life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

More broadly, regenerative agriculture goes beyond mere farming practices<\/strong>; it is a truly holistic approach<\/strong> aimed at producing food differently by moving away from products harmful to the environment, such as pesticides, fertilisers and agrochemicals.<\/p>\n

This approach to agriculture also takes human health into account<\/strong>, striving to use as few chemical inputs as possible that could ultimately end up in water, food or other products such as wool.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

    The importance of <\/span>soil<\/span> health<\/span><\/h2>\n

    A healthy soil promotes plant health, supports the ecosystem processes<\/strong> on which all life depends, promotes biodiversity<\/strong>, healthy plants, fodder for animals, and healthy food and products from a healthy environment. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Soil therefore plays a very important role in regenerative agriculture and especially in the global carbon cycle<\/strong>. Soil is the world’s largest active carbon absorber. Plants take up carbon from the atmosphere, transform it into plant tissue and return it to the soil in the form of plant residues. Agricultural practices influence the amount of carbon that soils retain but also the amount of carbon that is released into the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The <\/span>farming<\/span> techniques <\/span>used<\/span> in <\/span>regenerative<\/span> agriculture <\/span>improve<\/span> soil<\/span> health<\/span> by <\/span>increasing<\/span> the <\/span>organic<\/span> matter<\/span> and <\/span>carbon<\/span> content of the <\/span>soil<\/span><\/strong>. <\/span>With<\/span> more <\/span>sustainable<\/span> agriculture and <\/span>better<\/span> soil<\/span> management, <\/span>soils<\/span> have the <\/span>potential<\/span> to store <\/span>much<\/span> more <\/span>atmospheric<\/span> CO2. <\/span><\/p>\n

    A high <\/span>level<\/span> of <\/span>carbon<\/span> improves<\/span> the structure of the <\/span>soil<\/span> and <\/span>thus<\/span> increases<\/span> its<\/span> physical<\/span> <\/strong>stabilit<\/strong>y<\/span>. This in <\/span>turn<\/span> improves<\/span> soil<\/span> aeration<\/span>, drainage and water <\/span>retention<\/span><\/strong>, and <\/span>reduces<\/span> erosion<\/span><\/strong> and <\/span>nutrient<\/span> leaching<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Thus<\/span>, <\/span>regenerative<\/span> agriculture <\/span><\/strong>fixes <\/span>our<\/span> soils<\/span> and <\/span>positively<\/span> influences <\/span>environmental<\/span><\/strong> issues<\/strong> <\/span>such<\/span> as <\/span>desertification<\/span>, the <\/span>carbon<\/span> cycle, the water cycle and <\/span>mitigates<\/span> climate<\/span> change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n
